Last week I accompanied my art at Annie's Art & Frame in Ballard for the monthly art walk and had a chance to talk to some enthusiastic people about my work. I'd like to thank Sarah for all her help and curating expertise! The paintings look great in the space and I'm excited for the opportunities that are coming about from them being there.

ArtPrize Contest

ArtPrize is an international contest/exhibition based in Grand Rapids, MI that matches random venues with random artists online-dating style and puts it up to public vote to see which artists are deserving of the top prizes. First prize is a crazy $250,000.

"Thank you" to Richard, who sent me the link to the contest and gave me the heads up about applying before the deadline. I've entered and am going to give it a shot with my "Moss + Coffee" series. Now all I need to do is connect with some venues and see if any of them like my work.

KISS Cafe Show in July

I'm back to Ballard in July!

I'm really excited to have ALL NEW art up at the Kiss Cafe in Ballard for the month of July. I had so much support roll through quiet little Miro Tea in March that I have high hopes for the shindig at Kiss next month.

So join us Saturday, July 10th 6pm-close for the opening of "Moss + Coffee," my new series inspired by our very own Seattle.

Art Up: Park Pub

The Park Pub received so much positive feedback during the month of April that they ended up inviting me to keep my art there for May's Annual Greenwood-Phinney Ark Walk. This time I had a chance to check out the other venues and found a few gems. Alec Duncan's tiny watercolor murals were lovely and Romie Lindsley's Hello Again monsters were irresistible- I just wish the hosting venues made it easier to view (and purchase!) art. I want one of those monsters...I'm going to have to track Romie down.

Keeping it Rolling

I am very pleased to report that having my art up at Miro went really, really well. The artist reception on the night of the Ballard Art Walk was a lot of fun. A ton of people came through and I had the support of many friends, which felt fabulous. I sold two pieces and several people showed genuine interest in my work. I was even emailed later and asked by the owner of another venue to hang my work there for the month of April, which means a whole new neighborhood and a whole new art walk.

So if you missed the Miro Tea party or if you'd like to come out and support me and see the art again, bring some arty friends and join me at The Park Pub on the night of Art Up, the Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk, Friday, April 9th from 6ish-9ish (and beyond...)

March Show at Miro Tea in Ballard

My first show post-Ryder will be at Miro Tea for the month of March!

I'm so excited to be back working on my art again and actually getting it out there for people to see. It's especially encouraging to do so at place like Miro. Jeannie, the owner, is clearly passionate about art and has been wonderful to work with.

The last few years have been full of huge events (moving to a new city, buying a house, getting a dog, having a job, losing a job, having a baby...) and now I'm finally settling in and getting back to what I do. Some of the pieces shown will be from when I left off and some will be brand new. I'm thinking of it as a little event to bridge the gap from past to present and start off 2010 heading in the right direction.

Painting is a lonely splendor.

The act of creating from one's mind is a solitary one. To conceive of an idea and bring it into being as a means of true and thorough communication is a difficult objective and a lonely challenge- after all, aren't truth and reality relative? The contemplation and struggle that goes into taking on this particular subject drives my work, and for me, splendor lies in the search for the perfect way to express and idea, in the process of creating the artwork, and in the testing of the artwork's ability to communicate the original vision.

Within this topic of relative movement of knowledge and communication, I am interested in exploring how the many parts of the universe fit together and focus on seeking out those seams and boundaries- when thought turns to knowledge, when life turns to death... I find it fascinating that this way of thinking of communication can be applied on innumerable levels and scales, from immense to microscopic, from the chemical signaling of clusters of molecules across cytoplasm, to verbal communication of humans across the air-filled space between us, to the transfer of energy in actions and reactions across the universe.

No matter what specific object or thought is inspiring me at any given time, and no matter how my style develops or how differently my work turns out, I can relate it back to this concept and achieve at least a tiny sense of completeness and order. Hey, I'll take what I can get.
